THE PENITENTIAL RITE

God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy, welcoming sinners and inviting them to the Lord’s table.

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God’s forgiveness.

Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent and are sorry for all our sins , Father forgive us, strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith, pardon you and set you free from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, h in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

ISAIAH

A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse,
and a branch shall grow out of his roots.

The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him,
the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the spirit of counsel and might,
the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.

His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.

He shall not judge by what his eyes see,
or decide by what his ears hear;

A reading from the letter of Paul to the

ROMANS

Whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus, so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the circumcised on behalf of the truth of God in order that he might confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written,

“Therefore I will confess you among the Gentiles,
and sing praises to your name”;

and again he says,

“Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people”;

and again,

“Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles,

The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to:

MATTHEW

In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said,

“The voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
make his paths straight.’”

Now John wore clothing of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then the people of Jerusalem and all Judea were going out to him, and all the region along the Jordan, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit worthy of repentance. Do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our ancestor’; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

“I baptize you with water for repentance, but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

This Sunday our lectionary falls on Matthew’s gospel, and the story takes place during the ministry of John the Baptist. He is an unusual fellow, to put it mildly: a man of the wilderness, and not of the city. He lives in the desert wastes and survives on locusts and wild honey. And in a sense, his ministry is to call people into that wilderness. He invites them out of the cities, with all those distractions and temptations, and into the waters, back to nature, to examine their souls. He calls them out from their ordinary lives and into the flow of the Jordan.
Some argue that baptism is only a symbol of repentance and that what really matters is the state of the soul. But surely baptism is more than just a sign. A marriage begins years earlier, with a rush of attraction, a feeling experienced in the soul, out of sight, but does this mean that consummation is just a sign of that feeling and nothing more? Surely not. Consummation opens the relationship to new depths of intimacy, and it brings attraction to fulfilment. Baptism is also like this. It is a consummation of faith and of prayer.
Suppose that a woman passes by John the Baptist and finds herself turning toward his voice and wading into the river, almost despite herself. She is already devout and prays every day, but she is still seeking the waters, and the feeling of water on her skin is not a meaningless sensation, but a physical consummation of her prayers and of her devotion to Christ.
And when people are baptized in our day, the water that runs down their foreheads is more than just a sign. Baptism is symbolic, it is true, and richly so, but if it is only a symbol, then it is hard to see why we need it at all.
The Christian life is a blend of prayer and external rites, and unless we have both, then we have attraction to Christ but no consummation. John the Baptist knew that most of the people walking beside the Jordan were already praying, but he still invited them into the waters.
Our Christian tradition is a matter of the heart, and of interior prayer, it is true, but it is also more, for without the sacraments, without our liturgies and rites and hymns, it is much harder for prayer to reach its consummation, which is union with Christ. This is one reason that I have drifted farther and farther into the high church tradition. In the Catholic and Orthodox and Anglican churches, the sounds of ancient liturgies are still heard, and incense, rose windows, hymns, and icons touch and delight our senses, and all these things invite our prayers into a physical consummation.
Light falling into a plain room is just light, but light slanting through stained glass at Chartres or Cologne is somehow more: praise is summoned from the depths of our hearts at the sudden illumination of a rose window, praise that we hardly even knew was there. The church is not just a holy place apart from the world; it is also a domain of sensuality.
Monks in the Eastern Church say that prayer is the heart’s remembrance of God. And in the West, the Benedictines say that prayer is union with Christ, our beloved. And today, in this chapel of St. George, at our Eucharist, these two come together: recollection and consummation. We remember Christ is in our depths, we feel an attraction to Him, and then our prayers are consummated in bread and wine, as we assimilate His body and blood into ourselves.
When I was attending seminary at Duke University, I would sometimes wander into the chapel—a beautiful Neo-Gothic building—and just sit there looking up at the stained glass. In that place, my soul felt elevated, my senses heightened. Looking back, I now realize that I was wading into the Jordan. I had been praying for years, but I was still looking for consummation.

Blessed are you, God of all creation. Through your goodness, we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and the service of your kingdom.

Let us pray

We do not presume to come to your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies.  We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table, but you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him and he in us.  Amen.

It is right to give thanks and praise.

And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice, made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption.

As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of [N and] all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever.

Let us pray with confidence to the Father, as our Saviour has taught us:

Please approach the altar with cradled hands if you wish to receive the sacrament, or with the hands behind your back if you wish to receive a blessing. Each communicant responds ‘Amen’ when receiving communion in either kind.

THE THANKSGIVING

Let us pray.

Father of all we give you thanks and praise that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. May we who share Christ’s body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others; we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world. 

Keep us in this hope that we have grasped; so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name.

Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory.

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord: and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit , be amongst you and remain with you always.

Amen.

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord:
