THE PENITENTIAL RITE

God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy, welcoming sinners and inviting them to the Lord’s table.

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God’s forgiveness.

Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent and are sorry for all our sins , Father forgive us, strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Jesus said to the disciples, “But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man. Then two will be in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. Two women will be grinding meal together; one will be taken and one will be left. Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.”

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

“No one knows the day or the hour, not even the Son, but only the Father.” This is a strange admission to hear from our Lord. As Christians, after all, we are commanded to be hopeful about the future, and we pray every Sunday that “He will come again glory,” but in this passage we find that the future is shrouded in mystery, even for Jesus of Nazareth. And if He doesn’t know the day or the hour, how are we supposed to hope with confidence?
This is an old question. The earliest Christians believed that the Second Coming was imminent, but their expectations were thwarted, and here we are 2,000 years later, heirs to their disappointment and confusion. As Anglicans, as Christians, our hearts are suspended between the present and future: We know that one day, Christ will restore all things and that He will be all in all, and yet it is not this day. And because of this perennial delay, our recitation of the Nicene Creed becomes more and more half-hearted and dispirited as the years roll on.
“No one knows the day or the hour.” There is a strange paradox in these words. As I have said already, we are commanded to hope, and yet the future is shrouded in mystery. How can we hope and yet not understand? This perplexity is a normal feeling in the Christian life. And it constantly arises, not just in relation to the Second Coming.
Last year I visited Chiang Mai for the first time, and as I walked through the old city, weaving between the temples and cafes, it all felt like home, and I never wanted to leave. But this was a holiday, and of course, eventually, I did have to leave. Later I tried to recreate the experience: I visited again at the first opportunity, went to all the same places… But the magic had already burned away. It just wasn’t the same.
On that trip, I learned a valuable lesson, for I saw my error clearly: I had placed my hopes for the future in a city, and not in God. We Christians are always placing our hope in created things: Relationships, jobs, family, travel, new experiences… We hope that the relationship will endure and not dissolve, we hope travel will recharge us and restore our zest for life. We are masters who are deferring hope from one thing to the next. And this feels safer than hoping in God, who is invisible.
But if we hope in things visible—friends, relationships, jobs—this should cause an even greater anxiety, for change is inevitable, and time sweeps even our most cherished experiences away. At the end of the day, the anxiety of hoping in God is far better. It is unpleasant, yes. It feels as if our hope has no object as if we are groping in the void, yes, but nevertheless, this feeling hides deep wisdom, for it shows us that God is not an object or, for that matter, an experience. He is invisible and transcendent. And the anxiety, if understood for what it really is, merely reminds us that our hopes have no secure foundation in this world and that God transcends all things and is omnipresent: He is not this or that, and He is neither here nor there.
And so, the next time we are flooded by doubt, we should not regard this as a failure or a lack of faith, but as hope at its purest: This is merely the discomfort of wrenching our hopes from the world—a world of clear and distinct objects—and into a God who is invisible and ungraspable. This is our task, and it is the asceticism required of us.
All of us know this feeling, I imagine. St. John of the Cross writes about it in his Ascent of Mount Carmel and in his poetry. Darkness falls on the things of this world, and they no longer offer satisfaction. And on this night, we are disoriented, adrift, unsure of what to do next, and confused about where to place our hopes. But the darkness is the presence of God. For after all, we do not hope in the things and forms of this world, but in an immense mystery revealed in Christ. And this is a hard thing. But if we can learn to recognize the darkness as presence and not absence, it becomes easier to press on.
Resting our hope in the invisible is trying labour. And yet there is one visible form that we can cling to: Christ, the Son of God, the Second Person of the Trinity incarnate in human flesh. He is the form of that invisible and transcendent God, the face of the mystery. And through faith in Him, we can endure the dizzying anxiety of Christian hope, which is hope without an object.
God is our surest hope, and yet finding this hope often feels exactly like disappointment, for hope is never consummated in this world, but only in Him. We do not know the day or the hour, but this is a good thing, for it is better to know Christ.

We do not presume to come to your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies.  We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table, but you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him and he in us.  Amen.

Proper Preface

And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice, made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption.

As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of [N and] all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever.

THE THANKSGIVING

Let us pray.

Father of all we give you thanks and praise that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. May we who share Christ’s body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others; we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world. 

Keep us in this hope that we have grasped; so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name.

Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory.

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord: and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit , be amongst you and remain with you always.

Amen.
