The bishop greets the people

The Bishop introduces the service

Bishop: God calls his people to follow Christ, and forms us into a royal priesthood, a holy nation, to declare the wonderful deeds of him who has called us out of darkness into his marvellous light.

Bishop: The Church is the Body of Christ, the people of God and the dwelling-place of the Holy Spirit. In baptism the whole Church is summoned to witness to God’s love and to work for the coming of his kingdom.
To serve this royal priesthood, God has given a variety of ministries.
Deacons are ordained so that the people of God may be better equipped to make Christ known.  Theirs is a life of visible self-giving. Christ is the pattern of their calling and their commission; as he washed the feet of his disciples, so they must wash the feet of others.

Priests are ordained to lead God’s people in the offering of praise and the proclamation of the gospel.  They share with the Bishop in the oversight of the Church, delighting in its beauty and rejoicing in its well-being.  They are to set the example of the Good Shepherd always before them as the pattern of their calling.  With the Bishop and their fellow priests, they are to sustain the community of the faithful by the ministry of word and sacrament, that we all may grow into the fullness of Christ and be a living sacrifice acceptable to God.

Bishop: Let us confess our sins to Almighty God.
All: Merciful God, our maker and our judge,

We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, And in what we have failed to do;
We have not loved you with our whole heart; We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; We repent, and are sorry for all our sins.Father, forgive us, strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Bishop: Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith, +pardon you and set you free from all your sins, Strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life,

Homily by the Bishop

Today, I will speak unusually briefly.

Theologians argue about what moment of history should be considered as the beginning of the Christian Church. Some of them say that the Church began on the day of Pentecost when Peter delivered the first apostolic sermon, and then the first parishioners were baptised. Today we celebrate the memory of this great event.

Others claim that the Church began immediately after the resurrection when Jesus breathed on the apostles and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit: to whom you forgive sins, their sins are forgiven,” thus giving the apostles and their successors the authority to forgive sins. One of our seminary professors called priests “bearers of forgiveness.”

Still, others believe that the Church began on Holy Thursday when our Lord instituted the Eucharist, the principal sacrament of the Church. On Good Thursday, during the Last Supper, Jesus filled bread and wine with His presence, forever establishing the sacrament of His presence among people. Through this, His presence continues in the Church; here on the altar, the Word, again and again, becomes Flesh. Here God comes to us so real that it is even tactile, tangible.

And so, theologians argue to this day. But if we cannot say exactly when the Church began, we have already seen what the Church is for. She baptises us and then, in time, baptises our children because baptism is the gate to the Kingdom of Heaven. In the Church, repentant sinners are absolved of their sins by the priests. The Eucharist is administered within the Church when bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ, about which He said:

Whoever eats My Flesh and drinks My Blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. [John 6:54]

Priests exist to give you eternal life from God. These are people whom God has made special because in the sacrament of ordination, through the hands of a bishop, He has given them the authority to forgive sins and administer the sacraments.

God gave the priests the power to open Heaven for you. If a priest tells a penitent sinner that his sins are forgiven, they are forgiven in Heaven and on earth.

We exist for your salvation, beloved brothers and sisters. So, today you will receive a new priest and a new deacon. Respect them, please pray for them, help them, and most importantly, come to the church services as often as possible and call everyone to come here.

Well… I still didn’t tell what moment in history can be considered the beginning of the Church because, I do not know!

There is no exact date in the Gospel, but the Gospel speaks of the necessity of the Church for our salvation.

So, joyful Pentecost to all of you, holy fathers and candidates for ordination, and beloved brothers and sisters!

Bishop: Let us together profess the faith of the
Church:

ALL: We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God, begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,

The Declarations: Deacons

They who are to be ordained Deacon stand before the Bishop.

Bishop: Deacons are called to work with the Bishop and the priests with whom they serve as heralds of Christ’s kingdom.  They are to proclaim the gospel in word and deed, as agents of God’s purposes of love. They are to serve the community in which they are set, bringing to the Church the needs and hopes of all the people.  They are to work with their fellow members in searching out the poor and weak, the sick and lonely and those who are oppressed and powerless, reaching into the forgotten corners of the world, that the love of God may be made visible. Deacons share in the pastoral ministry of the Church and in leading God’s people in worship.  They preach the word and bring the needs of the world before the Church in intercession. They accompany those searching for faith and bring them to baptism.

Bishop: They assist in administering the sacraments; they distribute communion and minister to the sick and housebound.
Deacons are to seek nourishment from the Scriptures; they are to study them with God’s people, that the whole Church may be equipped to live out the gospel in the world.They are to be faithful in prayer, expectant and watchful for the signs of God’s presence, as he reveals his kingdom among us.

The Bishop addresses the Ordinands directly:

Bishop: We trust that you are fully determined, by the grace of God, to give yourself wholly to his service, that you may draw his people into that new life which God has prepared for those who love him.
And now, in order that we may know your mind and purpose, you must make the declarations we put to you. Do you accept the Holy Scriptures as revealing all things necessary for eternal salvation through faith in Jesus Christ?
Ordinands: I do so accept them.

Will you be diligent in prayer, in reading Holy Scripture, and in all studies that will deepen your faith and fit you to bear witness to the truth of the gospel?
Ordinands: By the help of God, I will.

Do you believe the doctrine of the Christian faith as the Church of England has received it, and in your ministry will you expound and teach it?
Ordinands: I believe it and will so do.

Will you strive to make the love of Christ known through word and example, and have a particular care for those in need?
Ordinands: By the help of God, I will.

Will you be a faithful servant in the household of God, after the example of Christ, who came not to be served but to serve?
Ordinands: By the help of God, I will.

Bishop: Will you endeavour to fashion your own life and that of your household according to the way of Christ, that you may be a pattern and example to Christ’s people?
Ordinands: By the help of God, I will.

Bishop: Will you work with your fellow servants in the gospel for the sake of the kingdom of God?
Ordinands: By the help of God, I will.

Bishop: Will you accept the discipline of this Church and give due respect to those in authority?
Ordinands: By the help of God, I will.

Bishop: Will you then, in the strength of the Holy Spirit, continually stir up the gift of God that is in you, to grow in holiness and grace?
Ordinands: By the help of God, I will.

The congregation stands and the Ordinands turn and face them.

Bishop: Brothers and sisters, you have heard how great is the charge that these ordinands are ready to undertake, and you have heard their declarations. Is it now your will that they should be ordained?

Will you continually pray for them?
All: We will.

Will you uphold and encourage them in their ministry?
All: We will.

The Ordinands turn back to face the Bishop, who continues, addressing them

Bishop: In the name of our Lord, we bid you remember the greatness of the trust in which you are now to share: the ministry of Christ himself, who for our sake took the form of a servant. Remember
always with thanksgiving that the people among whom you will minister are made in God’s image and likeness. In serving them you are serving Christ himself, before whom you will be called to account.

He who is to be ordained Priest stands before the Bishop, who addresses the congregation

Bishop: Priests are called to be servants and shepherds among the people to whom they are sent.With their Bishop and fellow ministers, they are to proclaim the word of the Lord and to watch for the signs of God’s new creation.

They are to be messengers, watchmen and stewards of the Lord; they are to teach and to admonish, to feed and provide for his family, to search for his children in the wilderness of this world’s temptations, and to guide them through its confusions, that they may be saved through Christ for ever. Formed by the word, they are to call their hearers to repentance and to declare in Christ’s name the absolution and forgiveness of their sins.

With all God’s people, they are to tell the story of God’s love.They are to baptize new disciples in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and to walk with them in the way of Christ, nurturing them in the faith.

Bishop: They are to unfold the Scriptures, to preach the word in season and out of season, and to declare the mighty acts of God.They are to preside at the Lord’s table and lead his people in worship, offering with them a

spiritual sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving.They are tobless the people in God’s name.They are to resist evil, support the weak, defend the poor, and intercede for all in need.They are to minister to the sick and prepare the dying for their death. Guided by the Spirit, they are to discern and foster the gifts of all God’s people, that the whole Church may be built up in unity and faith.

The Bishop addresses the Ordinand directly:

Bishop: We trust that long ago you began to weigh and ponder all this, and that you are fully determined, by the grace of God, to devote yourself wholly to his service, so that as you daily follow the rule and teaching of our Lord and grow into his likeness, God may sanctify the lives of all with whom you have to do.

Bishop: And now, in order that we may know your mind and purpose, you must make the declarations we put to you.

Bishop: Will you lead Christ’s people in proclaiming his glorious gospel, so that the good news of salvation may be heard in every place?
Ordinand: By the help of God, I will.

Bishop: Will you faithfully minister the doctrine and sacraments of Christ as the Anglican & Episcopal Church have received them, so that the people committed to your charge may be defended against error and flourish in the faith?

Ordinand: By the help of God, I will.

Bishop: Will you, knowing yourself to be reconciled to God in Christ, strive to be an instrument of God’s peace in the Church and in the world?
Ordinand: By the help of God, I will.

The congregation stands and the ordinand turns and faces them.

Bishop: Brothers and sisters, you have heard how great is the charge that this ordinand is ready to undertake, and you have heard his declarations. Is it now your will that he should be ordained?
All: It is.

Will you continually pray for him?
All: We will.

Will you uphold and encourage him in his ministry?
All: We will.

The Ordinand turns back to face the bishop, who continues, addressing him:

Bishop: In the name of our Lord we bid you remember the greatness of the trust that is now to
be committed to your charge. Remember always with thanksgiving that the treasure now to be entrusted to you is Christ’s own flock, bought by the shedding of his blood on the cross. It is to him that you will render account for your stewardship of his people.

Those who are to be ordained deacons stand.

The Bishop addresses the Ordinands:

Bishop: You cannot bear the weight of your calling in your own strength, but only by the grace and power of God. Pray therefore that your heart may daily be en- larged and your understanding of the Scriptures enlightened.
Pray earnestly for the gift of the Holy Spirit.
The Ordinands kneel and silence is kept.

Veni Creator is sung:

All: Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire,
and lighten with celestial fire;
thou the anointing Spirit art,
who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart.

Thy blessed unction from above
is comfort, life and fire of love;
enable with perpetual light

the dullness of our blinded sight.

Anoint and cheer our soiled face
with the abundance of thy grace;
keep far our foes, give peace at home;
where thou art guide no ill can come.

Bishop: For ourselves, for grace to repent and amend our lives, that we may be pardoned and absolved from all our sins, let us pray to the Lord.

we commit ourselves, one another,
and our whole life to Christ our God;
All: to you, O Lord.

Those who are to be ordained Deacon kneel before the bishop, who stands to pray.

We praise and glorify you, almighty Father, because in your infinite love you have formed throughout the world a holy people for your own possession, a royal priesthood, a universal Church.
And now we give you thanks that you have called these your servants Lloyd & Zachary, whom we ordain in your name, to share as Deacons in the ministry of the gospel of Christ, who came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
Therefore, Father, through Christ our Lord we pray:
Here the bishop lays his hands on the heads of those who are to be ordained Deacon, saying:

Bishop: Send down the Holy Spirit on your servant Lloyd/ Zachary for the office and work of a Deacon in your Church.
When the Bishop has laid hands on the Ordinands, the prayer continues:

Bishop: Through your Spirit, heavenly Father, give these your servants grace and power to fulfil their ministry. Make them faithful to serve and constant in advancing your gospel in the world. May they follow the example of Jesus Christ your Son,

and their actions reveal your glory,

give this your servant grace and power
to proclaim the gospel of your salvation
and minister the sacraments of the new covenant. Renew him in holiness,

to work faithfully with those committed to their charge.

may he reconcile what is divided,
heal what is wounded
and restore what is lost.
May he declare your blessings to your people;
may he proclaim Christ’s victory over the powers of darkness,
and absolve in Christ’s name those who turn to him in faith; so shall a people made whole in Christ
offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to you,
to whom, with the Son and the Holy Spirit,
belong glory and honour, worship and praise, now and for ever.

Fr. David says to the newly ordained Priest:
God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation.
All: We welcome you as an ambassador for Christ: let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.

The Peace

The Bishop introduces the Peace:

We are all one in Christ Jesus.
All: We belong to him through faith, heirs of the promise of the Spirit of peace.

The peace of the Lord be always with you
All: and also with you.

Deacon: Let us offer one another a sign of peace in
the traditional Thai way, with a Wai.

All may exchange a sign of peace.

Preparation of the Table Taking of the Bread and Wine

Holy Spirit, ever dwelling
In the holiest realms of light;
Holy Spirit, ever brooding
O’er a world of gloom and night Holy Spirit, ever raising
Sons of earth to thrones on high Living, life-imparting Spirit,

Bishop: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you. Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. And now we give you thanks because within the royal priesthood of your church you ordain Zachary to proclaim the word of God, to care for your people, and to celebrate the sacraments of the new covenant.

Therefore, we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:
All: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Bishop: Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness;
grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ;
who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;
do this in remembrance of me.

Great is the mystery of faith:

Bishop: And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice, made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of St. George all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever.

Bishop: Let us pray with confidence to the Father, as our Saviour has taught us:
