Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth.  Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.  Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.  Amen.

 Holy God, holy and mighty , holy and immortal, have mercy on us.

To Philemon our dear friend and co-worker, to Apphia our sister, to Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

When I remember you in my prayers, I always thank my God because I hear of your love for all the saints and your faith toward the Lord Jesus. I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective when you perceive all the good that we may do for Christ. I have indeed received much joy and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, my brother.

For this reason, though I am bold enough in Christ to command you to do your duty, yet I would rather appeal to you on the basis of love– and I, Paul, do this as an old man, and now also as a prisoner of Christ Jesus. I am appealing to you for my child, Onesimus, whose father I have become during my imprisonment. Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful both to you and to me. I am sending him, that is, my own heart, back to you. I wanted to keep him with me, so that he might be of service to me in your place during my imprisonment for the gospel; but I preferred to do nothing without your consent, in order that your good deed might be voluntary and not something forced. Perhaps this is the reason he was separated from you for a while, so that you might have him back forever, no longer as a slave but more than a slave, a beloved brother– especially to me but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord.

So if you consider me your partner, welcome him as you would welcome me. If he has wronged you in any way, or owes you anything, charge that to my account. I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand: I will repay it. I say nothing about your owing me even your own self. Yes, brother, let me have this benefit from you in the Lord! Refresh my heart in Christ. Confident of your obedience, I am writing to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say.

Now large crowds were traveling with Jesus; and he turned and said to them, “Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it will begin to ridicule him, saying, `This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.’ Or what king, going out to wage war against another king, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one who comes against him with twenty thousand? If he cannot, then, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for the terms of peace. So therefore, none of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all your possessions.”

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

Here is our homily from Sunday, 4th September:
Take up your cross and follow me. Let the dead bury their dead. No one can follow me unless he gives away all his possessions. I think it is fair to say that Jesus did not mince his words. And in this Sunday’s gospel reading, He tells us to shoulder a cross and to hate our families. He is not speaking literally, of course, and he does not actually want us to despise our father and mother. But even so, His words are not easy to hear, much less to understand. How, after all, can the Lamb of God, the friend of the poor, once an infant cradled in Mary’s arms, give such fierce commands? In moments like these, it almost seems that Jesus’ persona has shifted entirely and that He is a new man, unrecognizable.
​Is Christ really asking us to leave our families? Or to give up our possessions? Or to abandon all comfort and follow Him into the desert wastes? For the disciples, this is precisely what He was asking, but they lived in another time, during His earthly ministry, and to follow Him back then meant to leave home, to set out on the road and follow a lowly Nazarene from city to city and then, ultimately, to Golgotha. But today Christ is risen, He is not only Jesus of Nazareth, the Second Person of the Trinity, the Son begotten in eternity. And so how do we follow Him when He is everywhere?
In the Middle Ages, taking up the cross might have looked like St. Francis of Assisi, wandering around with his disciples, begging and preaching and serving the poor… but this vagrant lifestyle would have no value if it were not the sign and image of a more interior poverty, the poverty of trust in God, the poverty of having nothing but God. If it were not, in other words, an expression of faith.
And this, I think, is the key: Taking up the cross is not about sacrifice. Instead, it is about faith. Faith is what drove St. Francis into a life of poverty, faith is what drew the John and Peter and the other disciples to follow Christ. In faith, we are detached from everything that is not God, and this is what it means to hate father and mother; not to despise our family, but to find our security in God alone, to know that He provides and lights our way.
“Take up your cross and follow me” is a call to faith, not sacrifice. To leave home and become a missionary, to give away all our possessions… Making sacrifices like these demands a great deal of willpower. But what if willpower is not the point, and what if resolve is not the virtue required of us? For in sacrifice, we must pay attention to the offering, but it is better still to have only God in mind. In sacrifice there is already a trace of idolatry, attention spent on something other than God. But in faith, we know only God.
To experience family or material wealth as our primary source of security and then give these up to follow Christ… This is heroic. But to know, in faith, that in Christ alone lies our safety and peace, and that the shadow of His wing is cast over our entire lifespan… This is better. Faith is higher than sacrifice. And it makes sense, after all. When the disciples made sacrifices, when they gave up home and family, they needed faith, and every sacrifice requires faith. But faith does not require sacrifice. Faith is more real.
Even something as easy as speaking a kind word to a friend… This is an act of faith. Faith does not always show itself in dramatic ways, like martyrdom or a vow of silence. No; faith is more real than sacrifice, and it is not lessened by humbler expressions. To attend liturgy on Sunday. To partake of bread and wine. To encourage one another and laugh together. These are all acts of faith. And in these actions we encounter the same faith as the martyrs and the saints. Yes, sacrifice requires drama and toil but faith—as I have said once already—is not lessened by humble expressions.
We don’t have to imitate St. Francis in every detail to bless the world. We can simply be ourselves and let God be God in us. And then, without even realizing, we will have taken up the cross. And every act of love and service will be an offering of Christ’s presence, an offering of light. When Fr. David celebrates the liturgy, I see a deep expression of faith. When Lloyd makes new members of the congregation feel welcome, I see a deep expression of faith. And every act of faith means taking up a cross. Fr. David’s liturgy is taking up a cross. Lloyd’s kindness to strangers is taking up a cross. Again, it is the faith that counts, not the drama of its expression.
If we read this gospel passage too literally, it can lead to anxiety and self-deprecation. “I haven’t given all my possessions to the poor, maybe I’m not really committed to God. Maybe I should have sacrificed more, given more time…” We might begin to feel that our devotion is not strong enough, or less than it really is. We may even compare ourselves to the saints or the martyrs, or to great missionaries… And we feel small by comparison. Inferior. Insignificant. But faith is a spiritual virtue, and it has a wide variety of expressions. In handing a cup of water to a thirsty woman or child here in Pattaya, on walking street perhaps, we are manifesting the same faith that drove missionaries into foreign lands and enabled the martyrs to give their lives. The depth of faith and the drama of its manifestation are separate issues.
And what is more, expressions of faith are usually best if they line up with our specific gifts or calling. If we are called to preach, it is foolish to sing. We should merely preach. And if we are not called to martyrdom, it is foolish to give our lives.
​“Take up your cross and follow me…” No doubt some of Christ’s followers turned back at those words and returned to their homes. But this was not necessarily because they failed to muster enough willpower and stay the course, and it was not necessarily because they were unwilling to make sacrifices. No, I suspect their error was simply failing to see Christ with the eyes of faith. Perhaps they saw Him as a mere Nazarene, a drifter, and nothing deeper. And seeing Him as a drifter, they drifted away. They were following him in body alone. But those who were following Him in spirit and body… They had faith, and it was faith guiding their steps. Faith went before them and threw light onto their path.
​Elsewhere in the gospels Christ says, “I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.” And I think it is the same with faith. Faith is larger than sacrifice. It is more real. And shouldering a cross does not always mean carrying a burden.

Blessed are you, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and the service of your kingdom.

We do not presume to come to your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies.  We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table, but you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him and he in us.  Amen.

And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice, made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption.

As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of [N and] all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever.

Amen.

Let us pray with confidence to the Father, as our Saviour has taught us:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Let us pray.

Father of all we give you thanks and praise that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. May we who share Christ’s body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others; we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world. 

Keep us in this hope that we have grasped; so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name.

Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory.

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord: and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit , be amongst you and remain with you always.
