“Now therefore revere the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods that your ancestors served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. Now if you are unwilling to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

Then the people answered, “Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods; for it is the Lord our God who brought us and our ancestors up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight. A Reading from the book of

Ephesians 6:10-20

Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of righteousness. As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints. Pray also for me, so that when I speak, a message may be given to me to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it boldly, as I must speak.

The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to:

John 6:56-69

Jesus said, “Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever.” He said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum.

When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This teaching is difficult; who can accept it?” But Jesus, being aware that his disciples were complaining about it, said to them, “Does this offend you? Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But among you there are some who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the first who were the ones that did not believe, and who was the one that would betray him. And he said, “For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted by the Father.”

Because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him. So Jesus asked the twelve, “Do you also wish to go away?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.”

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

During Pentecost in Year B of the Lectionary, we have been studying the Gospel of Mark.  However, because Mark’s Gospel is the shortest of the 4, there is insufficient material to cover all the Sundays of so-called ‘Ordinary’ time, and so for the past four weeks, we have digressed, in order to delve at length into the sixth chapter of the Gospel of John.  Today, on the fifth and final Sunday of trying to absorb the signs and words of Jesus, we conclude this remarkable study on the meaning of Bread, at once corporeal, spiritual, and metaphorical.

There are few words in the English language, that are as heavy with meaning and metaphor, as the word ‘bread’.€ A poor woman in Greece comes to mind.  She had had a very hard life, both during the WW2 years and immediately afterwards.  At a time when there were no washing machines, she was trying to survive by washing other people’s clothesThis woman would not allow even a stale piece of bread to be casually discarded; she had such reverence for it, that she would kiss it before letting go of it.  Somewhere inside her, even though she could not understand the difficult ecclesiastical Greek of the Eucharist, she acted in a manner of a priest with consecrated bread.  For her, bread meant both survival and holiness!

Today’s gospel passage makes the reverence of a humble, illiterate woman understandable, even to those who have studied theology, and have delved into the intricacies of language.  We are walking on holy ground as we hear Jesus saying, ‘Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them’.€ A little later he says, ’This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died’.€

The disciples murmur among themselves, ‘This is a hard saying, difficult to take’.€ Like so many of Jesus’s words, these were offensive to those who adhered to tradition, in their religious practices and understanding.  Jesus knows it: ’Does this offend you?’ he asks them.

Archbishop William Temple in his superb study, Readings in Saint John’s Gospel, makes it quite clear that eating the bread means receiving the power of self-giving and self-sacrifice, while drinking the blood, means receiving the life that is triumphant over death.  He says that both elements are essential for the full reality of the sacrament to be effected: ’It is not the momentary eating, but the permanent abiding that is of primary importance.  The sacrament is normally necessary, but it is the communion alone that is vital’.€

And this communion is found in abiding in the Son, as the Son abides in the Father.  What comes through, in this magnificent sixth chapter of John, is the sense of abiding – a word that denotes continuity and communion -€a kind of security in the Spirit, an assurance that we will not be cast out into the void.

Those of Jesus’s followers, who were attracted to him because of his popularity, and his healing miracles, find these sayings hard to take.  So on that day, many left the community of Jesus. They were not alone: many, who carry the name of Christ today, are offended by the miracle of the Incarnation!

It is even in vogue today for people to claim to be ‘spiritual’ without having any church affiliation, or even any religious conviction.  We hear it in all walks of life: ‘Oh, I am spiritual, but not religious’! Archbishop Temple calls this ‘a vague religiosity, which has no definite and critical moments, no fixed religious practice, no cutting edge’.€

Jesus was not confrontational when many of his followers, finding his sayings hard to take, left him.  Jesus didn’t stop them; he let them go. Throughout his ministry, he let those who were offended go.  Unlike many of us, he used no PR, no gimmicks, and, above all, no magic to hold on to his followers.  He allows us our freedom in the same, poignant manner he used with his closest friends, ’the Twelve’.

One can imagine the sadness in his eyes, the wistfulness in his voice, as he asks them: ‘Do you also wish to go away?’ And Peter, being truly spiritual, ‘inspired by the Holy Spirit’, answers for all of the disciples, ‘Lord, to whom can we go?’€

After seeing the Light, how can any of us go to the Dark?  After tasting living water, how can we drink what is rancid?  After knowing the goodness of Life, how can we willingly choose death?  After knowing you, Lord, to who can we possibly go?  As Peter said to Jesus, ‘You have the words of life eternal’.

Peter, together with the other followers of Jesus, who stayed to the end, would feed on these eternal words as we are asked to do, Sunday after Sunday, when we receive ‘the Bread of Life, the Cup of Salvation’.€

Again and again in Saint John’s gospel, the crucial key to understanding is the miracle of the Incarnation. If indeed the Word became flesh, ‘if that occurred, nothing else is marvellous’, William Temple reminds us.

Once we accept the miracle of the Incarnation, all other miracles, all other signs, together with the words of life eternal, find their proper place in creation.  If we accept that, the greatest of all marvels, nothing else is marvellous indeed.  We abide in the marvel of the Word that became flesh, the Bread of life.

Let us pray to the Father, who sent his Son to be the Saviour of the world.

Protect the Church with the whole armour of faith and righteousness…Strong in the Spirit, may your people work diligently for the coming of your kingdom…Keep us firm in loyalty to Christ, the Word of eternal life.

We pray for the welfare of your church here on earth;  guide and govern it by your Spirit,  so that all Christians may be led in the way of truth,  and hold the faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life.

We ask your blessing on +Vsevolod our Bishop,  on this, our parish of St. George – for its work,  its worship and its witness.  We pray particularly for Fr. David in his ministry to us,  and for all members of our congregation,  be they near or far.

1 Lord in your mercy – Hear our prayer.

Bring peace to the many places  in the world where there is strife…Turn the hearts of those who take the path of violence and destruction, and give them a truer vision for your creation…Bless all who work for peace.

We pray for the leaders of all the nations of this world,  most particularly for the King and Government of Thailand at this time of unrest,  and also in the countries from which we come, and for all the people in countries that have had problems of any kind during this past week, remembering particularly the situation in Afghanistan.  .

Grant wisdom to all those in authority in every land,  and give to all people a desire for righteousness and peace,  the will to work together in trust,  to seek the common good,  and to share with justice and equity the limited resources of the earth.

2 Lord in your mercy – Hear our prayer.

Grant to our families the security that can come only from faith…Bless us, our friends and neighbours, and be our sure defence against all evil.

We pray for all who are prevented from,  or persecuted for practising their faith,  wherever they may beWe pray for our fellow Christians, both here in Thailand,  and also in our own home countries.

3 Lord in your mercy – Hear our prayer.

We pray for all those who suffer in body,  mind and spirit;  the sick;  the poor;  the depressed;  the lonely;  the afraid, the unloved;  the persecuted;  the unemployed and those who care for them. Those who grieve;  and those who have nobody to pray for them.

4 Lord in your mercy – Hear our prayer.

Pity and pardon all those who have lost the faith which once they held…Come to them with the assurance that, though they have foresaken you, you will never abandon them, and will bring them home.

We remember all those who have been touched by the COVID 19 pandemic;  particularly here in Pattai-Ya,  where so many lives and livelihoods have been destroyed;   and where there is such heavy dependence on the hotel, hospitality and tourist industry,  now given added urgency as the outbreak continues at a high level of severity. We pray for the on-going vaccination programme here in Thailand,  that greater numbers might be safeguarded more speedily,  and then be spared  the worst  of the unpleasant side-effects.

Amongst the sick we remember;

Fr. Tom, Brian, Kyoko, Alex, Colin, Mavis, Patricia,  Eric, Kent, Graham, Elizabeth, Conrad, Griselda, Jun, Ying,  and any others known personally to each and every one of us…

5 Lord in your mercy – Hear our prayer.

We give thanks for those who, having come to the Father through the Son, have entered into eternal life…Give them rest and peace, now that the warfare of the world is over for them.

We bring to you all who have died in the hope of the resurrection,   especially the millions who have perished in the COVID pandemic – for Michael, whose anniversary occurs at this time,  and for all those known personally to us, collectively or individually…

Give them joy in the fellowship of the heavenly church,  where Christ reigns for ever.

6 Lord in your mercy – Hear our prayer.

In the strength of the holy sacrament of the Lord’s body and blood, we offer these our prayers.

Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

THE CONFESSION:

God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy, welcoming sinners and inviting them to the Lord’s table.

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God’s forgiveness.

As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of [N and] all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever.

Father of all we give you thanks and praise that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Keep us in this hope that we have grasped; so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name.

Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory.
