HYMN: Be still, for the presence of the Lord, The Holy One is here
Be still, for the presence of the Lord,
The Holy One is here;
Come, bow before him now,
With reverence and fear.
In him no sin is found,
We stand on holy ground.
Be still, for the presence of the Lord,
The Holy One is here.
Be still, for the glory of the Lord
Is shining all around;
He burns with holy fire,
With splendour he is crowned.
How awesome is the sight,
Our radiant King of Light!
Be still, for the presence of the Lord
Is shining all around.
Be still, for the power of the Lord
Is moving in this place,
He comes to cleanse and heal,
To minister his grace.
No work too hard for him,
In faith receive from him;
Be still, for the power of the Lord
Is moving in this place.

BLESSED BE GOD: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit:
Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. ✝
And blessed be his kingdom, now and forever. Amen
From Easter to Pentecost:
Allelulia. Christ is risen!
The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia
In Lent and other penitential occasions:
Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins;
His mercy endures for ever.
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us pray:
Almighty God, to whom all hearts be open, all desires known and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
This prayer is omitted during Lent and Advent:
Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
Holy God, holy and mighty ✝, holy and immortal, have mercy on us.
THE COLLECT OF THE DAY
Almighty and everlasting God, in Christ you have revealed your glory among the nations: Preserve the works of your mercy, that your Church throughout the world may persevere with steadfast faith in the confession of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
THE FIRST READING
A Reading from the book of:
Isaiah 53:4-12
Surely he has borne our infirmities
and carried our diseases;
yet we accounted him stricken,
struck down by God, and afflicted.
But he was wounded for our transgressions,
crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the punishment that made us whole,
and by his bruises we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have all turned to our own way,
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.
He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
yet he did not open his mouth;
like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,
and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
By a perversion of justice he was taken away.
Who could have imagined his future?
For he was cut off from the land of the living,
stricken for the transgression of my people.
They made his grave with the wicked
and his tomb with the rich,
although he had done no violence,
and there was no deceit in his mouth.
Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him with pain.
When you make his life an offering for sin,
he shall see his offspring, and shall prolong his days;
through him the will of the Lord shall prosper.
Out of his anguish he shall see light;
he shall find satisfaction through his knowledge.
The righteous one, my servant, shall make many righteous,
and he shall bear their iniquities.
Therefore I will allot him a portion with the great,
and he shall divide the spoil with the strong;
because he poured out himself to death,
and was numbered with the transgressors;
yet he bore the sin of many,
and made intercession for the transgressors.
Thanks be to God
THE RESPONSE
Psalm 91:9-16
Qui habitat
9 Because you have made the Lord your refuge, *
and the Most High your habitation,
10 There shall no evil happen to you, *
neither shall any plague come near your dwelling.
11 For he shall give his angels charge over you, *
to keep you in all your ways.
12 They shall bear you in their hands, *
lest you dash your foot against a stone.
13 You shall tread upon the lion and adder; *
you shall trample the young lion and the serpent under your feet.
14 Because he is bound to me in love,
therefore will I deliver him; *
I will protect him, because he knows my Name.
15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; *
I am with him in trouble;
I will rescue him and bring him to honor.
16 With long life will I satisfy him, *
and show him my salvation.
THE SECOND READING
Hebrews 5:1-10
Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness; and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not presume to take this honor, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was.
So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him,
“You are my Son,
today I have begotten you”;
as he says also in another place,
“You are a priest forever,
according to the order of Melchizedek.”
In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.
This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God

ACCLAMATION
Alleluia! Alleluia!
The Son of Man came to serve,
And to give his life as a ransom for many.
Alleluia!
THE GOSPEL
The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to:
Mark 10:35-45
✝✝✝
James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to Jesus and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” And he said to them, “What is it you want me to do for you?” And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” They replied, “We are able.” Then Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”
When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, “You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.”
After the Gospel reading
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ
THE HOMILY
The theme of today’s readings is the rather uncomfortable one of suffering. What does suffering mean for you and for me? Do we get angry or resentful when we suffer? How do we think and feel about the suffering of others? These are the kinds of questions that today’s readings give rise to, both physically and emotionally.
When we initially hear this 1st reading from Isaiah, our hearts and our minds might both well have more than a slight feeling of revulsion. This is the kind of image of God that people sometimes like to throw at us as Christians: God is just a being that crushes you and knocks you down, whilst doing nothing to help you and raise you up! Nowhere would this be more true than when we consider natural disasters, such as we have just witnessed in the volcanic eruption on La Palma! How are we to reconcile this with the concept of a caring and loving God? What are we to say to these people, who have lost everything – home, loved ones and possessions? We have to work hard to try to justify what this reading says about God, and about us and our relationship with God!
When we begin to read this passage in the book of Isaiah, we realise that the Prophet is speaking to us about someone in his own time, who was able to love others enough so that he could offer his life for them. Although this is not a popular image in our culture of today, most of us still hold in high regard a person who is able to give him or herself totally to the service of others. This is certainly part of the reason there was such great admiration for Mother Theresa of Calcutta. Even at a totally secular level, when we meet people who are truly and sincerely working wholly for the benefit of others, generally we have great respect for them, even though we might well not want in any respect to imitate them!
Nevertheless, with a little more thought, we will soon come to see that the whole of this passage is a prediction about the suffering and death of Jesus Christ himself. A number of incidents, particularly in relation to the birth and death of Our Lord, are foretold with uncanny accuracy by the prophets of the Old Testament. It does, as I implied just a few moments ago, make uncomfortable reading, but none of this writing, no matter how graphic, can even begin to convey the agony and suffering of Our Lord’s passion!
Here God crushes this “suffering servant” only because the “suffering servant” has offered his own life so that others might live. It is not a vengeful and mean God, but a God who understands the person who wants to give his life for others. And it is an invitation to each and every one of us to look into our own hearts, and ask if we too can give our lives for other people. How far can we go along this road? How much can we, or perhaps more properly, are we prepared to give?
The Gospel too picks up on this same theme, when the sons of Zebedee come and ask for a special place by the side of Jesus in “his glory.” You will doubtless recall that only a fortnight ago, we found the disciples more interested in their own standing and status than in being receptive to what Jesus was trying to impart to them about his own impending suffering and death. These two men were already looking out for themselves for the life to come! But Jesus tells them that they simply don’t know what they are asking, with the implication that they must be quite out of their minds; the only thing that he can promise them is suffering—and he assured them that they will indeed suffer! The other 10 of the chosen band are indignant about all of this, not because they are so pure and disinterested, but they seem to be kicking themselves that they did not think of it first for themselves, although the story doesn’t actually tell us that. All of this gives Jesus an opportunity to teach that the most important thing for them is to learn how to serve others. We must become the slave of others—and that is a very strong statement. We need to serve, and to give our lives as a ransom for others, just as Jesus did!
Our 2nd reading, from the letter to the Hebrews, dwells on this point, dealing with the priesthood and its commitment to service: Jesus, as the eternal high priest, is able to understand us because he took on our human condition, and has been tested in every way as we are. That phrase “tested in every way,” is supposed to be telling us that He suffered like us, because he was truly human, as we are reminded each and every time we say the Nicene Creed, as we shall be doing in just a very few moments.
So today we are invited by Our Lord Himself to share in His life, and to share in His suffering, so that our world can be redeemed. I am not sure how far I can go in suffering, but I want to go as far as possible for the love of the Lord, and to love others.
How about you?
Amen.
THE NICENE CREED
Please stand for the Nicene Creed.
Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. ✝
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary,
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
✝ and the life of the world to come. Amen.
INTERCESSION
PROPER 24 – YEAR B – p96-97
21st Sunday after Pentecost
20th Sunday after Trinity
29th Sunday in Ordinary Time
a. Let us pray to the Father, who sent his Son to be a ransom for many.
b. Bless those whom you have called to be priests, and ministers in the Church…Fulfil your purpose in them, that they may always be faithful to the divine priesthood of Christ…Free them from worldly ambition, and guide them to serve you faithfully in all things.
We pray for the welfare of your church here on earth; guide and govern it by your Spirit, so that all Christians may be led in the way of truth, and hold the faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in the righteousness of life.
We ask your blessing on +Vsevolod our Bishop, on this, our parish of St. George – for its work, its worship and its witness. We pray particularly for Fr. David in his ministry to us, and for all members of our congregation, be they near or far.
1 Lord in your mercy – Hear our prayer.
c. Give to the rulers of the world such wisdom and care that can come only from your grace…Let all in authority use their positions with justice, learning that the spirit of service is greater than the love of power.
d. In our homes, and in our work, shield us from selfish disputes…With mutual love, let us live in the obedience that Jesus taught his followers, by his word and his example.
We pray for the leaders of all the nations of this world, most particularly for the King and Government of Thailand at this time of unrest, and also in the countries from which we come. We remember also all the people in countries that have had problems of any kind during this past week, most particularly all those caught up in the tragic situation in Afghanistan, the floods here in Thailand, and the volcanic eruption in La Palma.
Grant wisdom to those in authority in every land, and give to all people a desire for righteousness and peace, the will to work together in trust, to seek the common good, and to share with justice and equity the limited resources of the earth.
2 Lord in your mercy – Hear our prayer.
e. Have mercy on those who suffer under oppressive regimes…Strengthen those who are sad and afflicted…Heal their suffering through the sufferings of Christ.
We pray for all who are prevented from, or persecuted for practising their faith, wherever they may be. We pray for our fellow Christians, both here in Thailand, and also in our own home countries.
3 Lord in your mercy – Hear our prayer.
We pray for all those who suffer in body, mind and spirit; the sick; the poor; the depressed; the lonely; the afraid, the unloved; the persecuted; the unemployed and those who care for them. Those who grieve; and those who have nobody to pray for them.
4 Lord in your mercy – Hear our prayer.
We remember all those who have been touched by the COVID 19 pandemic; particularly here in Pattai-Ya, where so many lives and livelihoods have been senselessly destroyed, and where there is such heavy dependence on the hotel, hospitality and tourist industry, as the outbreak still persists at an uncomfortably high level of intensity. We pray for the on-going vaccination programme here in Thailand, giving thanks that greater numbers are being safeguarded more speedily, and then be spared the worst of the unpleasant side effects.
Amongst the sick we remember;
Fr. Tom, Fr. Michael, Brian, Kyoko, Colin, Mavis, Patricia, Eric, Kent, Graham, Elizabeth, Conrad, Griselda, Jun, Maurice, Martyn, Emilia, Chris, and any others known personally to each and every one of us…
5 Lord in your mercy – Hear our prayer.
f. We pray that the departed may rest in Christ, the author of their salvation…Have mercy on those who are dying, that as they share his experience of death, they may rise with him to eternal life.
We bring to you all who have died in the hope of the resurrection, especially the millions who have perished in the COVID pandemic – , for Margaret (3) and David (2)…. … for Ray, whose anniversary occurs at this time, and for all those known personally to us, collectively or individually… We remember with sorrow the tragic murder of the British MP in Essex and pray for the many who have been saddened at this senseless killing.
Give them joy in the fellowship of your heavenly Kingdom, where Christ reigns for ever.
6 Lord in your mercy – Hear our prayer.
[DAVID] – g. We offer our prayers through Christ, as his loving servants.
Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

THE OFFERTORY
THE OFFERTORY
Blessed are you, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and the service of your kingdom.
Blessed be God forever.
Let us pray
We do not presume to come to your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table, but you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him and he in us. Amen.
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER C
CLICK HERE FOR EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
The Lord be with you.
and also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give thanks and praise.
Father, we give you thanks and praise through your beloved Son Jesus Christ, your living Word, through whom you have created all things; who was sent by you in your great goodness to be our Saviour.
By the power of the Holy Spirit he took flesh; as your Son, born of the blessed Virgin, he lived on earth and went about among us; he opened wide his arms for us on the cross; he put an end to death by dying for us; and revealed the resurrection by rising to new life; so he fulfilled your will and won for you a holy people.
Proper Preface
Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying:
Holy, holy, holy Lord God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest. ✝ Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body ✝ which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.
In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood ✝ of the new covenant,
which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it,
in remembrance of me.
Great is the mystery of faith:
Christ has died:
Christ is risen:
Christ will come again.
And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice, made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption.
As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of [N and] all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever.
Amen.
Let us pray with confidence to the Father, as our Saviour has taught us:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
O Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. ✋
O Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.✋
O Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant us peace.✋
**(Note: All are encouraged to tap their breast three times following the example of Fr. David as he utters the words ‘…have mercy, …have mercy and …grant us peace’)**
We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.
Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
This is the Lamb of God ✝, who takes away the sins of the world;
Happy are those who are called to his supper.
Lord, I am not worthy ✊ to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed.
**(Note: All are encouraged to strike breast following the example of Fr. David as all utter the words ‘not worthy’)**
After Communion the celebrant and the congregation say
Let us pray.
Father of all we give you thanks and praise that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. May we who share Christ’s body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others; we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world.
Keep us in this hope that we have grasped; so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name.
Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory.
The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord: and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit ✝, be amongst you and remain with you always.
Amen.
Go in peace to love and serve the Lord:
In the name of Christ. Amen.
HYMN: In the Cross of Christ I glory, Towering o’er the wrecks of time
In the Cross of Christ I glory,
Towering o’er the wrecks of time;
All the light of sacred story
Gathers round its head sublime.
When the woes of life o’ertake me,
Hopes deceive, and fears alloy,
Never shall the cross forsake me,
Lo! It glows with peace and joy.
When the sun of bliss is beaming
Light and love upon my way,
From the Cross the radiance streaming
Adds more lustre to the day.
Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure,
By the Cross are sanctified;
Peace is there that knows no measure,
Joys that through all time abide.
