THE PENITENTIAL RITE

God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy, welcoming sinners and inviting them to the Lord’s table.

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God’s forgiveness.

Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent and are sorry for all our sins , Father forgive us, strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, h in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Almighty God, whose Son our Saviour Jesus Christ is the light of the world: Grant that your people, illumined by your Word and Sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ’s glory, that he may be known, worshipped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Almighty Father, who inspired Simon Peter, first among the apostles, to confess Jesus as Messiah and Son of the living God: Keep your Church steadfast upon the rock of this faith, so that in unity and peace we may proclaim the one truth and follow the one Lord, our Saviour Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Isaiah:

Listen to me, O coastlands,
pay attention, you peoples from far away!
The LORD called me before I was born,
while I was in my mother’s womb he named me.

in the shadow of his hand he hid me;

in his quiver he hid me away.
And he said to me, “You are my servant,
Israel, in whom I will be glorified.”
But I said, “I have labored in vain,

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind– just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you– so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to

John:

John saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’ I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.” And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.”

The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, “Look, here is the Lamb of God!” The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon. One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated Anointed). He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

“Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” These words are spoken by St. John the Baptist as he sees the messiah walking toward Him. And as Jesus wades into the river to be baptized, John does not see him by physical sight alone, but also with the eye of the heart, with spiritual intuition, and the light of grace infuses and merges with the light of day to reveal Christ in His fullness, as God and man. To borrow the language of Bruno Barnhart, this is a moment of recognition. John does not merely see Christ; he also recognizes Him for who He really is.

This passage does not explicitly mention the baptism of Christ, but it seems likely that this is the scene, and we would have heard it all described in last week’s gospel, had we not been observing the Feast of the Epiphany.

Baptism is a symbol of repentance and conversion, and this rite of passage often takes place when a person turns away from the attractions and illusions of this world and toward God. But I fear that we often misunderstand repentance and, in the process, place too large a burden on ourselves. Repentance is not abandoning sin, because abandoning sin means that sin is the primary object of our attention as we muster up enough willpower to reform bad habits and lay them to the side. But no, repentance is primarily a sign that we have recognized Christ, and that we—like John—have seen Christ approaching, so to speak. It is a sign of the presence of Christ within. A change in action or behavior is merely His presence rippling outward from the interior realm of contemplation into the exterior realm of action.

We should not, therefore, think of grace as a force that acts on us from without and makes us behave well, or that summons a moral resolve from within us, or as something that changes us in the sense of making us more obedient. No, grace is merely the presence of God, and the purpose of grace is to reveal Christ, and that is all. But seeing Christ, we do change, for once we see the beauty of God, we desire to become like Him, and this is more of an aesthetic labor than a moral one: for we are striving to resemble Christ, not to obey.

The moralistic view of grace, as if it works on us at the level of action and not at the level of contemplation, often leads us to think of repentance in unhealthy ways as well. We often think of repentance as self-blame, for example, as if we must chastise ourselves for failing to live up to moral codes. But this is not so. Grace reveals Christ, and so recognition always precedes repentance. The light of grace that emanates from Christ shows us the Father, and it is seeing the nature of the Father—which is infinite and impassible love—that changes us, and not our own resolve. The intimacy of recognition precedes our works. We see that God is love and we become love. And this is union, not self-discipline.

John sees Christ. And later in this passage, so does Nathaniel. His experience echoes John’s experience. As he sees Christ walking toward Him, and He sees infinite love shining through the face of an ordinary Nazarene. And this, too, is a moment of recognition, and it is no small thing. For after all, many others looked on the same face and saw the wrong identity: instead of seeing the Son of God, they saw a criminal, a political leader, an insurrectionist, an ordinary peasant, or some other thing. And only after seeing Christ did Nathaniel follow Him. Only in the wake of that first recognition did he abandon home and possessions, follow Christ, and accept the invitation to “Come and see.” Works and actions flow from seeing, action from contemplation.

But this does not mean that the recognition of Christ is always instantaneous. Throughout the gospels, we see that the disciples vary widely in how quickly they got the message, so to speak. For some, like Nathaniel, they immediately saw Christ as the Son of God, but others had to sift through other, false identities before arriving at the truth. For the latter, the dawning of Christ’s uncreated light was more gradual: first they saw him as an insurrectionist destined to restore the kingdom of Israel to an earlier splendor, but later, after a spending a great deal of time with him, traveling with him, they began to see, and a once blurry and indistinct form suddenly came into focus.

Contemplation precedes action. And grace is contemplative, not active—or perhaps it is better to say that grace is contemplative before it is active. And action is but an image of the heart’s merging with Christ.

Let us pray

We do not presume to come to your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies.  We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table, but you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him and he in us.  Amen.

It is right to give thanks and praise.

Proper Preface

And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice, made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption.

As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of [N and] all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever.

THE THANKSGIVING

Let us pray.

Father of all we give you thanks and praise that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. May we who share Christ’s body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others; we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world. 

Keep us in this hope that we have grasped; so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name.

Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory.

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord: and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit , be amongst you and remain with you always.

Amen.
