This prayer is omitted during Lent and Advent:

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth.  Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.  Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.  Amen.

 Holy God, holy and mighty , holy and immortal, have mercy on us.

Almighty God, you have given your only Son to be for us a sacrifice for sin, and also an example of godly life: Give us grace to receive thankfully the fruits of his redeeming work, and to follow daily in the blessed steps of his most holy life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Jeremiah

Am I a God near by, says the Lord, and not a God far off? Who can hide in secret places so that I cannot see them? says the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? says the Lord. I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy lies in my name, saying, “I have dreamed, I have dreamed!” How long? Will the hearts of the prophets ever turn back– those who prophesy lies, and who prophesy the deceit of their own heart? They plan to make my people forget my name by their dreams that they tell one another, just as their ancestors forgot my name for Baal. Let the prophet who has a dream tell the dream, but let the one who has my word speak my word faithfully. What has straw in common with wheat? says the Lord. Is not my word like fire, says the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?

A reading from the book of

Hebrews

By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as if it were dry land, but when the Egyptians attempted to do so they were drowned. By faith the walls of Jericho fell after they had been encircled for seven days. By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had received the spies in peace.

And what more should I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets– who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, obtained promises, shut the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Others were tortured, refusing to accept release, in order to obtain a better resurrection. Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned to death, they were sawn in two, they were killed by the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, persecuted, tormented– of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and in caves and holes in the ground.

Yet all these, though they were commended for their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had provided something better so that they would not, apart from us, be made perfect.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.

Jesus said, “I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! I have a baptism with which to be baptized, and what stress I am under until it is completed! Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division! From now on five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three; they will be divided:

father against son
and son against father,

mother against daughter
and daughter against mother,

mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law
and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

He also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, `It is going to rain’; and so it happens. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, `There will be scorching heat’; and it happens. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?”

After the Gospel reading

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

“Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth?” Jesus asks and then answers, “No, I tell you, but rather division!” The Prince of Peace, says, “From now on five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three; they will be divided: father against son and son against father… mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”
Jesus experienced this separation as his own family was torn by his ministry. The Gospels tell us that there was a time when his family wanted to bring him home. Division is the price of true peace.
The word for peace in Hebrew is “shalom.” Not just the absence of war, shalom means wholeness, well-being, and health, prosperity as well as what we think of as peace.
Similarly, the phrase used by Arab Christians, Jews and Muslims when they say ‘as-alaam alaikum’ all refer to the same peace; God’s peace which passes our understanding. That promise of God’s peace was part of Jesus’ life and message all along.
Jesus often sent those he healed on their way by saying, “Go in peace.” We say it here too.
Jesus longs to bring more profound health and wholeness to our world, and the cost of that process is, at first at least, division. The greater peace comes at the expense of lesser peace. The peace of God brings an end to the false peace and, as Jesus says, can pit family members against each other.
Lesser peace looks like a relationship where trust has gone, for whatever reason, while never letting those around them know that life at home is anything but ideal.
Lesser peace facilitates the abuse of bigots in a group, whether family, friends or any given community of any size, who offend those without ever being confronted and told that their abuse is unacceptable.
Lessor peace is resigning ourselves to a feeling of powerlessness when we see problems which we could contribute to a solution and yet we do nothing.
The examples go on and on. We see problems. We say nothing and so try to keep the peace. We each and all have examples of this in our own lives, but the same problem is also writ large. We still have a long way to go before all of God’s children experience the wholeness and well-being that is the shalom found in the Reign of God. Whether because of unequal distribution of wealth, or access to opportunities in life or simply because of exclusion from housing, health, education or employment, the division comes when the message of Christ attempts to redress inequalities imposed by the randomness of birth.
The Lesser peace, the status quo has always supported and protected those whose birthright happened to be privileged. The same can be said anywhere in the world. Not least here in Thailand.
Jesus wants no lesser peace to take the place of true and lasting peace.
Until there is confrontation from a position of compassion and firmness, how can there be trust and peace in a deceitful, one-sided or selfish relationship?
Until victims are supported and provided equality and protection and the bigots confronted and shown how un-Christ-like they are, how can there be peace in an abusive family, group of friends or community?
Until we each and all do our bit to fight the existential threat of climate change for example, by standing up and saying something, doing something, demanding something – it is likely that those who benefit from the status quo will not bother to change it.
But all too often we grab hold of a lesser peace as tightly a security blanket. Rather than having the courage to speak the truth in love, we remain silent, preventing the possibility of real peace. Jesus continually reached out to the outcast in his own society. Jesus upset the status quo and eventually was killed for rocking the societal boat a little too much. Jesus did bring God’s peace to the earth, a true and lasting peace, but the price was division.
History is littered with countless nameless examples of people settling for a lesser peace when God was calling them to something more.
Last week we were lucky enough to have had a baptism of Francesca. Living into the new life in Jesus, promised in baptism, can and will change our behaviour and attitude over time if we take it seriously. Taking the promises made in baptism should change our lives.
Yet, this commitment to the promises is juxtaposed in many of us with a desire to avoid conflict and preserve a lesser peace.
The cost of accepting these accommodations and compromises is that this prevents our breaking through to the deeper peace waiting for us. God’s true and lasting peace, Shalom, calls us to stand against injustice. Any time we preserve the peace at someone or some group’s expense, we trade God’s shalom for a very poor imitation.
Where have we become accommodated to peace for ourselves at the price of peace for someone else? What would it look like to speak out against a lesser peace in our family, our community, and our world?
The gift of speaking the truth in love is not the division we fear, but the deep peace for which we long.

We do not presume to come to your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies.  We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table, but you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him and he in us.  Amen.

And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice, made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption.

As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of [N and] all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever.

Father of all we give you thanks and praise that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Keep us in this hope that we have grasped; so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name.

Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory.

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord: and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit , be amongst you and remain with you always.
